I chose strategy consulting because I think it is where you can have the broader vision of business: you get to meet and work with high-level clients, and the recommendations you make will impact the client’s organization as a whole.

I believe that OC&C is a great career choice once you have chosen to work in strategy consulting: it is a top consulting firm with high quality expectations but where young consultants like me are very quickly involved, both internally within the team and externally with the client. I had joined OC&C Germany in 2004 and after several national and international projects I started to pursue a PhD in 2007. OC&C Germany has a very attractive program for doing so. After some years of work experience with OC&C you can take a leave of absence for pursuing an advanced degree, e.g. an MBA or PhD.

Hence, I have taken two years off to pursue my PhD endeavours while receiving considerable financial, material and mental support from OC&C. I significantly benefit from work experience when doing research - from practice, systematic problem solving and project management methods, I learned at OC&C.

Nonetheless I am looking forward to coming back to OC&C! Job variety, client interaction, a fast paced team environment and organisational impact are main attributes of consulting and very important aspects for my long-term career choice.

Your learning curve is extremely high, from the beginning you can discuss with important decision makers and present your results to them - A quality which only strategy consulting offers to job entrants.

I choose OC&C because of the environment and the people. From the first interview on I had the impression that people in OC&C are different, and after 2.5 years I definitely can say that this impression was right. Meanwhile, a huge part of people are not only colleagues but also now friends.

Working on different projects in ever changing industries, meeting people from new companies is what drew me to strategy consulting. Each assignment is unique, allowing you to learn something new every day. Strategy consulting gives you the opportunity to help people on a strategic level that may fundamentally change the way this company is operating.

As you progress through the company you continue learning. At the beginning you are responsible for delivering pieces of research and specific slides, you then take ownership of full workstreams and later you start managing entire projects.

When applying, the first hurdle is the cover letter and CV. Make sure they are clearly structured, easily readable and there are no mistakes on either. Your case study should be well structured having a hands-on approach offering us creative solutions. When you are invited for interviews either via telephone or in person make sure you are on time and prepared to go through additional cases, be honest and true to yourself.

I was born and grew up in South China. My family moved to the United States when I was 17. I studied engineering for my undergraduate degree at U-Penn, and got my MBA in Oxford. Prior to joining OC&C in Shanghai at the beginning of 2010, I worked in consulting in the U.S. and in China for a few years. I have to say, being a manager at a rapidly growing OC&C China office is fun!

My typical work activities include working with client and managing project engagements. What really differentiates OC&C is the quality of the people, the deep knowledge of the Firm and the fun initiatives that we put together.

People at OC&C are fun to work with. The directors have very deep industry knowledge and expertise. We usually work in a small team that consists of a director, a manager and 2 to 3 consultants. Everyone works closely and effectively as a team to provide our clients the highest quality of service. A true team work environment.

On a monthly basis, we have an office wide get-together. We hosted OC&C’s Global Executive Committee to participate in the “OC&C 2010 Expo Scavenger Hunt” in Shanghai World Expo; organized a cruise trip in Hong Kong in the summer. And, we are now preparing an office winter retreat to another exciting destination!

After my studies at Columbia Business School, I joined the strategy practice of Adjoined Consulting (now part of Capgemini), where I worked as a Principal Consultant. Prior to my 2 years at Columbia, I was the financial controller for the Professional Bowlers Association in Seattle, WA.

My days can be drastically different. Each day is usually a balance between client work and firm building activities, and the variety from day-to-day always keeps things interesting.

This is my third year at OC&C. I enjoy the fact that my job always changes. From project to project there is always something new to learn, something interesting to try – that keeps me excited about getting up and coming into work each morning.
